✦ Gen AI was definitely the buzz word of 2023, but 2024 is set to be even bigger! With most industries already integrating AI, and current AI offering 40% increase in productivity - the best time to learn and adopt AI in to your business is NOW!! And when it comes to that, I've got your back. Read on to see how.
Hey you beautiful person you! 💖
Welcome to 2024!! That statement is just mind boggling!! I remember when I was little, and my mum would talk about how time seemed to just go faster and faster...and I always thought it was a little bit silly. But now that I have kids of my own and I'm (what I like to think) a proper adult...I can completely relate. So as we welcome in another year, I wanted to send the first members-only newsletter of '24 packed with the top 10 trends we will see in AI this year. This has huge implications for the way we will work and live - so read on!
🚀 Get Ready for continued AI fever in 2024!
Hold onto your hats! By now we well and truly know that Generative AI isn't just a tech trend; it's the herald of the 5th industrial revolution. And the big dogs at Microsoft, Google, and Meta are cranking up the volume for an even wilder show in 2024.
Why should you care? Because generative AI can seriously increase productivity, efficiency and accuracy - across almost any task you can think of. But its STILL dominated by men. By and large, men are making these tools, deciding the data they are trained on, and make up the majority of users. This means that women are at risk of being left behind (yet again)...and after decades spent trying to catch up from the 'have a baby and stay home' era...this is a huge risk! This is why I'm so passionate about empowering women with AI (for more about my offers, visit my website).
So here are the 10 hottest trends in AI that will shape 2024:
🌐 Trend 1: Bigger And More Powerful Models
To think that at the start of 2023, we only had ChatGPT3....there was no multi modal option, no vision, no voice, no ability to upload your own materials. How times have changed! And they are getting even bigger and more powerful—GPT-5 is waiting in the wings! The datasets are bigger, and I predict future models will reduce user friction and be even better at guessing what you want (and so mega-prompts will be less necessary). Buckle up; it's going to be a wild ride.
🕵️ Trend 2: The Rise of the Deepfakes
Hold onto your votes! With elections around the globe, including the USA, UK, and India, generative AI might be pulling some pranks. Expect deepfakes, political propaganda, and personalised campaign messages flooding the scene. There is more need than ever to ask questions, be skeptical, and to arm yourself with AI literacy.
😊 Trend 3: Open Source AI Surge
Building powerful AI models usually costs a fortune, but open source AI makes it affordable and accessible. In 2023, projects like Stable Diffusion and AutoGPT soared in popularity on GitHub, marking a shift towards collaborative development. Open source AI, like Meta's Llama 2 and Mistral AI's Mixtral models, is leveling the playing field, providing smaller entities access to advanced AI tools. This could reshape the AI landscape in 2024.
🚀 Trend 4: Retrieval-Augmented Generation
Generative AI faced a hiccup in 2023 with hallucinations, leading to concerns, especially in enterprise settings. Enter Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), a game-changer. By combining text generation with information retrieval, RAG boosts accuracy, relevance, and context in AI-generated content. This not only enhances performance but also cuts down on model size, making it faster and more cost-effective.
🌐 Trend 5: Tailored Enterprise AI
While massive AI models like Midjourney and ChatGPT grab attention, businesses are realising the power of niche, customised models. Building from scratch is resource-intensive, so many modify existing models. This approach, more cost-effective than API calls to public models, caters to specific needs in sectors like healthcare, finance, and legal. Expect a diverse range of AI models in 2024, offering targeted solutions (and to see some of the exciting projects I'm working on in this space with amazing female-founded businesses).
🔍 Trend 6: Hunt for AI Talent
The demand for AI and machine learning talent is red-hot, and it's not limited to big tech companies. As AI integrates into business operations, there's a surge in the need for MLOps professionals who can bridge theory and practice. However, skills like AI programming and data analysis are in short supply. In the coming year, organisations will focus on building internal AI capabilities, a key aspect of digital transformation.

💡 Trend 7: Shadow AI Challenge
With generative AI becoming more accessible, "shadow AI" is on the rise. Employees, eager for quick solutions, adopt AI without official approval, risking security and privacy issues. In 2024, organisations will need to manage this trend through clear policies and approved platforms, balancing innovation with data protection. Regardless of approval, AI is already pervasive in workplaces, emphasising the need for ethical use. (Again, reach out if you need professional guidance on AI policy development.)
🤖 Trend 8: Generative AI Reality Check
The initial excitement around generative AI is giving way to a reality check in 2024. As organisations move from experimentation to implementation, they face challenges such as output quality, security concerns, and integration difficulties. This phase, often termed the "trough of disillusionment," will lead to a more realistic understanding of AI's capabilities. Clear use cases tied to business goals will be crucial for successful AI projects.
🎉 Trend 9: Ethics and Security Spotlight
As mentioned above - the reality check will put a spotlight on ethics and security. It will become crucial for all businesses to be acutely aware of AI capabilities and limitations, and for leaders to understand how this applies to their particular work and industry. As AI is moving so quickly, organisations will need to develop and enforce AI best practice well before governing national bodies have put regulation in place. As always, early adopters will get the advantage here.
🕵️ Trend 10: AI Regulation Takes Center Stage
2024 is a pivotal year for AI regulation, with laws evolving globally. The EU's AI Act sets a comprehensive standard, potentially influencing global AI development. GDPR, along with the AI Act, could position the EU as a leading AI regulator. In the U.S., the lack of federal legislation is prompting organisations to proactively address compliance. With AI regulation becoming a key focus, businesses must stay adaptable to navigate the changing landscape. Australia is seen as proactive in this space but we still dont have firm legislation...so watch this space!
So, pop the virtual champagne, because 2024 is about to get fantastic and weird and wild!
